Much of the debate around artificial intelligence in education is framed incorrectly. The dominant concern is that AI will allow students to bypass learning entirely — that answers will be generated instantly, effort will disappear, and education will hollow out as a result. This concern is understandable, but it misunderstands what AI actually changes.
AI does not eliminate learning. It compresses it.
When a technology dramatically lowers the cost of producing outputs — whether text, music, code, or analysis — the bottleneck shifts away from execution and toward understanding.
