The Australian AI Music Alliance recently held a strategic discussion with Mark Isherwood, Secretariat of DDEX, the international standards organization for digital music metadata exchange, to explore emerging frameworks for AI-generated music identification and potential collaboration within the global music ecosystem. The meeting focused on advancing transparency, interoperability, and rights management standards in the rapidly evolving AI music landscape.
During the discussion, Mark outlined the organization’s role in developing and maintaining data communication standards for the music industry. As the body responsible for widely adopted standards such as the Electronic Release Notification (ERN) framework, DDEX continues to facilitate industry-wide collaboration while maintaining a technology-neutral approach to metadata standardization. Recent updates to DDEX standards have also enabled AI-related disclosures within music delivery workflows.
Australian AI Music Alliance presented its proposed AI music identification framework, an extension of the existing ISRC system designed to provide greater transparency regarding the level of artificial intelligence involvement in music creation. The framework introduces a structured methodology for recording AI participation across different stages of production, while preserving compatibility with existing industry metadata infrastructure. Submitted information, including AI tools used and creative process documentation, is securely recorded and linked through decentralized content identifiers.
The Alliance also shared insights from an initial pilot program covering approximately 1,500 registered music works. Preliminary findings indicate significant adoption of AI-assisted creation tools across multiple production stages, highlighting the growing need for standardized metadata practices that accurately reflect human and AI contributions within creative works.
Both organizations acknowledged that AI music classification presents challenges beyond simple binary labeling. Future industry solutions may require more granular approaches capable of representing varying levels of AI involvement throughout the creative process. Participants agreed that addressing these challenges will require ongoing collaboration among technology providers, rights holders, distributors, and standards bodies.
The conversation also explored opportunities for Australian Music Alliance to participate in DDEX working groups, including AI-focused initiatives. DDEX welcomed the prospect of greater engagement from organizations working at the intersection of AI, music commercialization, and rights management, noting the value such expertise could bring to industry-wide discussions.
In addition, both parties identified potential opportunities for future cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region and China, where AI-generated music adoption continues to accelerate. Expanding dialogue between regional stakeholders and international standards organizations was recognized as an important step toward fostering global interoperability and reducing fragmentation across emerging AI music ecosystems.
As a next step, Australian Music Alliance will evaluate pathways for DDEX membership and explore opportunities to contribute to ongoing standards development efforts. Both organizations expressed a shared commitment to open dialogue, industry collaboration, and the development of transparent frameworks that support innovation while protecting the interests of creators and rights holders.
